In most places in the world, a mother can find out the sex of her unborn child, but in India, it's illegal to do so. That is because if she's a female, there is a good chance she will never be born.
Female infanticide -- whereby tiny girls were either poisoned, buried alive or strangled -- has existed for thousands of years in India. But its boy-to-girl ratio didn't begin to widen precipitously until the advent of the ultrasound, or sonogram, machine in the 1970s, enabling a woman to tell the sex of her child by the fourth month of her pregnancy.
That coupled with the legalization of abortion in 1971 made it possible to dispose of an unwanted girl without the neighbors even knowing the mother was pregnant.
China gave an even bleaker assessment last month, with the government saying that its men will outnumber women in the year 2020 by 300 million.
i din quite understand wat was going on when i read the article above. i mean i know that such stupid practices exist but c'mon, we're in the 20th cent. supposedly pep have a diff thinking level, no? but den again i may have been brought up in a protective cocoons thinking that all child is a gift from God while not even halfway across the globe the SLAUGHTER OF EVE still takes place.

"The minute the child is born and she opens her mouth to cry, they put sand into her mouth and her nostrils so she chokes and dies.They bury infants into pots alive and bury the pots. They put tobacco into her mouth. They hang them upside down like a bunch of flowers to dry.
And here we are fighting for stray dogs on the road while somehwr there's a whole society that ruthlessly hunts down girls.
well i'm sorry if i started on a very bias note. u see i myself come from a family with 4 girls. we had a brother but he passed away when he was younger. the usual reaction we receive from people is this : HAAAA? ALL 4 GIRLS AH? NO SON AH?(with peering eyes and sorry looks)
lol my sisters and i usually laughed about it but deep down i wondered how my mother reli felt about it. as tho losing a son is not hard enough some people think a family without a son is a handicap no matter how well to do the girls are. whatever it is, i must say my parents did a pretty gud job raising us. tho we wr all girls we all took turns doing the plumbing, drilling and fixing work and bttr yet, my 2nd sister plays the tabla. (an instrument used by the Sikhs for worship in temple that is usually played by boys)
some have even gone to the extreme saying that raising a daughter is like watering ur neighbour’s garden. wtf ryte?
hmm i wonder how long will these rotten customs take to come to an end. they keep promoting gender equality all around yet i find it very disturbing to see that such shameful practices are still being carried out.
They deserve a chance.
Our ancestors left us with many traditions that we should respect. But this is pure bullshiet i say.
